Ode 38
(As it appears in The New New Testament pages 428 and 429)
I went up
to the light of Truth
as to a chariot,
and Truth led me,
and brought me,
then caused me to pass over
chasms and fissures,
And I was removed
from cliffs and valleys.
Truth became
a haven of salvation for me,
and set me upon
the place of immortal life.
He went with me,
gave me rest,
and did not permit that I should stray,
because he was and is Truth.
And there was no danger for me,
since I was walking with him,
and I did not err in anything
since I obeyed him.
For Error fled from him,
and did not ever encounter him.
But Truth
proceeded in the honest path,
and showed me
everything that I did not recognize.
All of the drugs of Error,
and those trappings of death
that seem to be of true joy,
and the corrupting of the Corruptor,
I saw when the bride who corrupts
was adorned,
and the bridegroom who destroys
is destroyed!
So I asked Truth,
"What are they?"
And he said to me,
"This is the Liar and the Error,
they imitate
the Beloved and his Bride
and cause the generation to stray,
and they ruin it.
And they invite many
to the wedding feast,
they give them
the wine of their intoxication
to drink.
Then their wisdom
and understanding
are vomited up,
making them foolish.
And they abandon them,
then they linger
while raving and ruined,
since there is no heart in them,
neither are they seeking it,"
But I have been made wise
so that I will not fall
into the hands of the Liars.
And I rejoiced for myself
because Truth
had gone with me.
I was established,
lived,
and was redeemed,
and my foundations
were set upon the hand of the Lord,
because he planted me.
For he set the root
and irrigated it,
supported it,
blessed it,
so its fruits will be forever.
Then it dug deep, and it grew up and spread out
and it was full and it was enlarged.
The Lord alone
was glorified,
in his planting
and his cultivation,
in his care
and the blessing
of his lips,
in the beautiful planting
of his Right Hand,
and in the discovery
of his planting
and the understanding
of his mind.
