psalm Variations

Variation on Psalm 1

Mysterious are your ways,
oh God;
forceful is your hand;

fear binds us to lies
yet you craft our lives
to deliver truth,
crush deception,
lighten our load
free our souls
to proclaim
your steadfast love
render us submissive
to what's right
in your sight
or be subjected to human oversight;

we submit to your
tender-as-possible guidance,
oh God,
and then sense your Presence
as medicine for doubt,
confirmation as salve
for our worries,
peace in you
as balm for agitation.

you show your Wisdom
to move us closer
throughout our days'
in our goings and comings,
our entrances, and our exits,
all crafted with care.

Forceful is your hand;
Mysterious are your ways,
oh God.

Variation on Psalm 6

My Creator,
have mercy
through the pains
of inherited ways;
aches, troubles
held in the body,
old ideas
held in the mind;
"more is revealed"
as Kimmy says,
"was blind! Now I see"
John Newton cried when God awakened him
to the horror of his enterprise;
Pains for me
arthritis in knees...
and the need,
the need to people please
or have NO self esteem
am NOT the salt,
preserving flavor
am NOT the light
guiding others along the way.
Heal God, for bones-soul chaff!
why take so long?
deliver this life
pushed up 'gainst steel-wall womb
skin torn
'gainst cold metal,
let move into moist
birth passage
into light
as in the beginning
to come out wailing...
testing to hear voice manifest...
testing to be loved while a bloody mess
deliver for the the sake of your reputation,
after all, you need each story
that speaks of your glory,
the legitimacy of living in and for you;
we can't praise
from a grave
or stuck
in a steel womb;
the light you ignite is diminishing,
grows weak each hour...
hear us, hear the wail,
know the tears, pleas, prayers;
please drive demons away,
humbled to have once more believed
they could overpower your Love.
Psalm 23?

Are you their shepherd?
Are you taking care of their needs?
Are you giving them time
to plop down in a field
or on the beach in peace?

leading
 to where you refresh,

restore their soul?
How are you leading the right way?
Show yourself!

They are walking
in the shadow of death,

doubting your love,
your power,
afraid more ill may come,

not sure you are with them,
almost sure you are not,
disheartened by the trials,
the new set backs.

Where is the table lovingly set
in the presence
of all their internal questions, doubts, fears?

the bounty meant to reassure them?
Where is the oil
for the anointing of their head?

How is goodness and mercy with them?
how will they dwell
in your house forever?

Why God, why have you forsaken?
Why are you so far from saving?
They cry out at night and by day
and you are silent.

Their parents trusted in you
and you showed up,

when they cried out,
you rescued them

but now,
where are you for the children?

Psalm 29 Variation

Voice
hovers over the waters,
booms,
blossoms;
trees break,
deserts jump like calves,
stars scatter
like water from wet, wild cubs.

Voice
flashes forth flames of fire,
shakes wilderness,
makes deer birth
strips forest bare;

In the beginning
was the Voice,
with God,
and it was God,
Life
that shines
in the darkness
;
all was made through it;
not to be overcome.

May the Voice
give strength to its people!
May the Voice
give peace to its people!
Variation on Psalm 46

God is

my safe inner outer space
internal
external
eternal
Source

therefore I will NOT FEAR
though
waters rise, cancer's in late stage

though
innocents suffer
encaged

though
dictators dance

or insanely rage

a river’s streams
make glad
God's City of Angels

God is in her;
she shall not be moved;

God will greet her as morning dawns;

nations rage,
kingdoms totter
God utters voice
Earth melts,

The LORD of ALL is with
and in us;

The GOD of Hagar
hears our cry.

Come!
see the works of the Most High!

the demolition with intent
to cease all fighting
anything, anyone;
our Creator

breaks the ego,
shatters the pride,
shuts down self-drive
and cries,

"Be still and know that I AM.
I will be exalted on the Earth.
I will be revealed as ETERNAL LOVE."

The LORD of ALL is our fortress, our sky;
The GOD of Hagar hears our children's cry.

Psalm 100

Sing your heart out!
Bang your joy on drums!
Play that trumpet,
keyboard, flute!

We fold into God that way!

We are made by the One,
belong to our Maker;
we are the notes of "I Am's" music
so empty out, harmonize, chant, pray;
open, dissolve the separation,
clear away the wreckage!
Don't hold back!
Give thanks and bless the Lord with songs
for God is Good, endures forever,
is unchanging.

We all, all that lives,
exist in
with each other

and return
to our original image

our original nature, name, energy,
our root.

Sing!
Play the drums
Let music resonate
to re-member that root.
Praise the Lord!
