The Gospel of Thomas

Sayings of Jesus: 73, 74, 75

Saying 73
Jesus said: The harvest is great, but there are only a few workers. Ask the master to send more workers for the harvest.

People fall back into alcoholism and addictions of all kinds after short, medium, and long term lengths of abstinence. The initial joy of release from the torture of the cycle wore off and the problem appeared; the problem was me, my reactions, beliefs, sensitivities, old ideas. Many of us, with varied lengths of sobriety, suffer without the support of someone we trust, someone to confide in, to continue to tenth step with, share the journey with. God, through the circumstances of our lives, is always uncovering old ideas that need to be released, to be spoken to another person in order to be healed.  Workers help harvest and release old ideas, what needs to be let go, unlearned, admitted. Workers "feed and tend the sheep, feed the lambs." The sheep are those who have been around a while. The lambs are the newcomers.

Saying 74
He said: Master, there are many around the drinking barrel, but there is nobody in the well.

Be the water. Be the living water, that which gets inside the souls of others, merge with them, be present and ready for them when they need you. Listen. Be the water in the well. The phone rings; answer it. The newcomer pauses at the door; smile, welcome her. The inventory is finished; surrender to hear it.

Saying 75
Jesus said: There are many standing by the door, but only the single will enter the bridal suite.

The bridal suite, where love making happens. Does "single" mean "singleness of purpose?" My primary purpose is to carry the message. Is that evidenced in my walk each day? Is this when the sweet love-making happens?  I was blessed to fall in love and be married in my sobriety. Two beautiful children were born. Did I always honor my primary purpose in AA? Certainly not. Family often came first. Work, too. But each day did start with prayer, and more and more of my days, moments were imbued with prayer as my powerlessness was revealed in more nooks and crannies of my days. Does that mean my eye was single, seeking out the will of the Most High evermore? Always nudged by pain back to God.
